Holiday Help
borrowed from
The Old Farmer’s Almanac
The days are spiraling down to become the shortest
of the year, just when we could use a few more hours of daylight.
To make things easier, we’ve posted an
everything-holiday page
including dozens of
recipes, party-planning tips, crafts, gift ideas,
folklore, and fun. Visit this page often to
help you every step of the
way from now
until the end of the year!
This week brings a festival of lights—from
St. Lucia’s Day to
the Geminids—all to brighten
the darkest days of the year . . .
December 13—St. Lucia’s Day
St. Lucia
(also called Lucy) was a 4th-century Italian
martyr. Her name is
derived from the Latin lux, meaning
“light,” so she has become
associated with festivals
and celebrations of light.
Before the Gregorian calendar reform in 1752,
her feast day
occurred on the shortest day of
the year (hence the saying “Lucy light,
Lucy light,
day and longest night”).
Traditionally, the oldest daughter dons a
crown of burning candles and wakes the family
with coffee and
St. Lucia buns
(sweet rolls seasoned with saffron).
December 13/14—Geminids
The Geminid meteors perform after nightfall
on Tuesday, December
13. No other meteor shower
boasts more meteors than the Geminids—with
75 per hour in a dark sky. This year, viewing
may be diminished by the
Moon’s light.
See more at our Meteor Showers Guide.
Thank you for joining me again today - please do come
back tomorrow -- many, many heartfelt thanks for
all the email's and entries in my guest book. I was
just reading back over some of them yesterday and
at times, it is overwhelming for me just how many
view and take the time to tell me how the page
was for that day and how it might have touched
one's heart. They all truly inspire me to continue
to do my pages - and with that being said, remember,
be safe - be always aware of everything
and everyone around you and most
of all - have a great day!
